You are about to enrol at university, but you don't know the meaning of some words?
Here is a list of the most important and common terms within the university world:

A-D

Examination dates
These are the dates on which examinations can be taken, usually corresponding to the end of the lecture periods for each course of study.

CFUs (Credits for University Training)
A Credit for University Training (CFU) is the Italian equivalent of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). One CFU corresponds on average to 25 hours of work, including classroom lessons, laboratories, projects and autonomous preparation.

Degree Class (L/LM)
This is the set of study courses that belong to the same level, i.e. the same educational objectives and the same legal value (established by ministerial decree). The degree class is indicated next to the name of the course by the abbreviation L (laurea) or LM (laurea magistrale) and a number: knowing it is indispensable because it allows you, among other things, to know which professional registers you can enrol in or which public competitions you can take part in, once you have graduated.

E-O

Registration
This is the procedure for enrolling in the first year of a university course, which ends with the assignment of a matriculation number, i.e. a personal code that appears on every document related to the student's university career.

Three-year degree
The Bachelor's degree course lasts three years and aims to provide students with an adequate mastery of general scientific methods and content, as well as the acquisition of specific professional knowledge.

Master's Degree Course
The Master's Degree Course follows the Bachelor's Degree Course, lasts two years, and aims to provide the student with advanced training for the exercise of highly qualified activities in specific fields or for access to professions.

The Single-Cycle Master's Degree Course
The Single-Cycle Master's Degree Course lasts five years and aims to provide students with advanced-level training for the exercise of highly qualified activities in specific fields regulated by European directives (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy), for access to the legal professions and for teaching in nursery and primary schools.

Manifesto degli studi
This is the document that defines the courses and how they are run, and is published for each academic year. The Manifesto contains all the most important information, such as admission requirements, enrolment and enrolment procedures, deadlines for enrolment in admission tests, deadlines and procedures for assessing initial preparation, and the amount of fees, contributions and allowances payable by students.

Matricola
It is the number that is associated with each student when he or she enrols at the University and which identifies him or her. This number is used to take advantage of the services offered by the University such as borrowing books and registering for exams.

OFA (Obbligo Formativo Aggiuntivo)
Indicates the educational debt that is assigned if you do not pass the initial preparation test for admission to a Course (Laurea or Laurea Magistrale a Ciclo Unico). In this case, it is possible to enrol on the course, but it is necessary to clear the debt within the first year of enrolment, with specific procedures depending on the course itself.

P-Z

Study plan
This corresponds to the course of study, i.e. the list of educational activities (compulsory and optional) that you intend to follow during your course of study. The study plan generally has to be submitted each year of enrolment during the periods set by the course.

Examination session
This is the period when classes are suspended and exams are taken. There are usually three sessions: summer, autumn and winter.

Internships
Temporary theoretical-practical experience within a working environment in Italy or abroad, carried out by both students and recent graduates, with the aim of providing training or simple orientation for professional choices. The traineeship is carried out on the basis of special agreements, drawn up by the university. It may be curricular or non-curricular. If provided for in the degree course regulations, it may result in recognition in terms of training credits.
