Suggestions for CV writing

The CV represents the personal and professional business card of a job seeker. Its preparation requires special effort and attention; the goal is to present oneself and one's strengths in a clear, concise and effective manner.

The purpose of sending a CV is to enable the candidate to get to an interview. The company needs to perceive a reasoning made by the candidate towards them.

Below we present some tips by the Ateneo Career Service operators. We invite you to consult them and take a cue, remembering that the CV remains a document to be created and customize to your measure, according to your tastes and needs.

What CV format to use?

Although it is always good practice to inquire with the company about any special format requirements (especially for foreign countries, where there may also be different content requirements), it can be drafted through three formats:

  • customized (by custom it turns out to be the preferred one by private companies; you can make it freely or take inspiration from websites such as Canva, Monster, Pinterest, etc...)
  • Europass (especially for public calls)
  • AlmaLaurea (within the portal of the same name)

What should a CV contain?

It is up to the candidate, after gathering all the necessary information about the company to which he or she is sending, to take care of structuring the resume in the most effective way possible.

Remind how recruiters havevery little time to read a CV; it should therefore be short (ideally one page for custom format, maximum two if Europass or Almalaurea),clear and uncluttered.

Generally, the ingredients contained in the following table cannot be missing:

Photo (optional)Professional and smiling
Tips: the photo can help personalize the CV.
Use professional attire and neutral background.
Don't use passport photo format.Dial name/contact informationSurname and first name, date of birth, city of residence, phone number, email, any driver's licenses.
Tips: insert web references or social networks, if pertinent to the profession.Personal presentation and professional goals1) brief description of self and areas of expertise/professional interest
2) future goals and rationale for which you are sending the CV.

Advisories: insert experiences in anti-chronological order (starting with the most recent) ongoing experiences. Enhance the most important experiences and those in line with the position for which you are applying.

You can enter occasional jobs or jobs not in line with the specific position for which you are applying, possibly even separating them graphically from the main experiences (e.g., by creating a "other professional experience" section)
For those who do not yet have professional experience, you can delete this section from your CV.

CompetenciesTechnical-professional, organizational, computer, linguistic etc...Advisories: enhance skills in line with the professional field or specific position for which you are applying there.  Indicate the level of mastery of skills, and, if applicable, learning contexts.Hobbies/InterestsShort list of interests and activities done in your free time.
Advisories: Intrigue the recruiter by briefly describing your hobbies and tell the reasons behind your interest.Consent to the processing of personal dataAdvise: insert a reference to the legislation of the country in which you are applying (e.g.: for Italy, the text can be "I authorize the processing of the personal data contained in my CV for recruitment and selection purposes, according to EU Regulation no. 2016/679 (GDPR) and by D.Lgs. 196/2003 as amended (code on the protection of personal data).")Date, signatureTips: insert a recent date to let the recruiter know that the CV is up to date.
After putting the date and signature and before sending the CV to the recruiter, check that the document is of good quality and legible in every part.

I found it very good, it exceeded my expectations, the explanations were very clear and the tips very useful, I am very satisfied with the result, I and my CV thank you.

  • Attention to detail

The counselors showed great care and attention to the individual case. They carefully read all the material I had sent and gave me very useful advice.

  • Unexpected insights

Ability in bringing out relevant professional and educational information from the CV; suggestions given in choosing new, more up-to-date, resume templates that I was not aware of. No weaknesses.

  • Support and motivation

The career counselor was very knowledgeable about the field and above all a great motivator. I liked that he gave me some proper "tips" to correct my CV. Also, I think it is worth noting the great availability to view my CV one more time after editing, available for more suggestions.

  • Availability also in the future

It is a valuable service. The greatest strengths are the personalization of the counseling and the possibility of repeating it over time.
