Telephoto Remote Sensing for River and Estuarine MorphodynamicsThe Remote Sensing System for River and Estuarine Morphodynamics is an innovative product developed by the research group coordinated by Prof. Nicoletta Tambroni. River mouths, deltas, estuaries and lagoons are coastal regions that are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including sea level rise, increased intensity and frequency of extreme events. These factors can cause coastal erosion, flooding and the loss of ecologically valuable environments. The study of morphodynamics has made considerable progress over the decades, including from a theoretical perspective. However, the models developed need data in order to be tested and, eventually, employed in machine learning algorithms. From this point of view, tele-detection is a powerful tool that provides data and a way to monitor changes in these systems over time. Among the data that remote sensing can provide are channel widths, large-scale bedform positions and topography. Objective The objective of the project is to explore the use of remote sensing for the collection of morphodynamic data related to watercourses, useful for their monitoring, as well as for the validation of morphodynamic models to predict their behaviour and future evolution. Advantages The main advantage of the proposed technology lies in the fact that it develops an integrated model for reconstructing the topography of watercourses from remote sensing imagery that enables the collection of long-term morphodynamic data in a spatially comprehensive manner.
