Validation of a degree obtained abroad

The necessary documentation for the validation of a degree achieved abroad is the following:

  • Academic degree (original or certified photocopy) authenticated by the competent Italian Diplomatic or Consular Authority OR by “Apostille” OR accompanied by the Statement of Verification issued by CIMEA (Information Centre on Academic mobility and Equivalence – www.cimea.it)
  • Official translation in Italian of the above mentioned degree provided by the competent Italian Diplomatic or Consular Authority, or by an official translator and confirmed by the Authority itself, or validated by an Italian Court. The translation is not necessary if the document is provided in either English, French, Spanish or Portuguese
  • Declaration of value (“Dichiarazione di valore”) (original) provided by  the competent Italian Diplomatic or Consular Authority. International students can provide, as an alternative to the Declaration of value, the Diploma Supplement OR a document issued by one of the ENIC-NARIC centres (see www.cimea.it, Statement of Comparability) OR other document issued by the Diplomatic or Consular authority of the country where the title was obtained.  Students who have a degree obtained in one of countries included in the ARDI database developed by CIMEA are exempted from submitting the Declaration of value or the Statement of Comparability
  • Transcript of records (original) authenticated by the competent Italian Diplomatic or Consular Authority or by “Apostille”. The transcript is not required if you submit the Diploma Supplement
  • Official translation in Italian of the above mentioned transcript (not required if documentation is provided in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese)
  • Syllabus (namely the Courses description) confirmed with the original stamp of your University of origin
  • Official translation in Italian of the above mentioned syllabus provided by the competent Italian Diplomatic or Consular Authority, or by an official translator and confirmed by the Authority itself, or validated by an Italian Court. The translation is not required if documentation is provided in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese

How and When can I submit my request of Recognition?

Students from non-EU countries must apply for pre-enrollment on the website www.universitaly.it, within the deadlines established for each academic year.
EU students and non-EU students legally resident in Italy can contact the Welcome Office ONLY from February 1st to March 31st and from October 1st to November 30Th of each year and submit:

  • the above mentioned documents and a scanned copy of each saved on a USB driver or sent by email. In case of documents only provided by email, hard copy will be requested once the course board has completed the assessment
  • € 16,00 revenue stamp
  • ID card  or passport and, for students coming from non-EU countries, the residence permit
  • Forms filled and signed (available at the bottom of this page)

The payment of € 100,00 is requested as a fee for obtaining the evaluation. The payment slip with the amount due will be issued by the Welcome Office once verified that the documents are complete and correct.

The competent Course Board will examine the student’s previous career and curriculum and will evaluate the equivalence of the international academic degree with the corresponding Italian degree issued by the University of Genoa or alternatively, the transfer of credits. If the student obtains a partial recognition, he/she is allowed to enrol in the requested course of study through the credits transfer and pass the exams still missing to obtain the Italian degree. If the student obtains the total recognition, he/she will have to pay an extra amount of € 400,00 for the activities related to the issue of the certificate of recognition of the foreign qualification. If the requested course is a restricted access course, before enrolling the student may be requested to pass the admission test, following the deadlines and instructions contained in the specific call.

For the degrees in Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, Health care professions and Sciences of Architecture (bachelor programme) the total recognition is never granted: International students who have a degree in above mentioned fields must therefore follow instructions detailed in the related call “Avviso di ammissione ad anni successivi al primo” published once a year on the web page of the course
