UniGe a Doha 7-8 ottobre 2025

Lorenzo Schiano di Pepe, a UniGe lecturer in EU law and International and European law of the sea, helped organise the 12th conference of the Advisory Board for the Law of the Sea (ABLOS), a body constituted by the International Hydrographic Organisation and the International Association of Geodesy, which was held in Doha (Qatar) on 7 and 8 October 2025.

The conference, entitled "Is UNCLOS fit for modern times: achievements, challenges and future pathways", was attended by, among others, the president of the International Geodesy Association Richard Gross, the director of the International Hydrographic Organisation Luigi Sinapi, the president of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea Tomas Haider and the representative of the United Nations Division of Law of the Sea and Oceanic Affairs Alice Hicuburundi. Other speakers included academics, practitioners, and representatives of non-governmental organisations from legal, technical and scientific backgrounds and from a wide range of geographical origins. The proceedings were hosted by the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, more specifically the Standing Committee on the Law of the Sea Convention of the Gulf State.

The conference thus provided an opportunity for discussion and dialogue on topics such as ocean management, climate change, technological developments and scientific observation. The various sessions were interdisciplinary in nature, provoked considerable debate among the participants and confirmed the great interest in the law of the sea, even in its more strictly technical implications.

The conference was an opportunity to discuss and discuss the law of the sea.

On the sidelines of the conference, meetings of the Advisory Board were held, which led to the reconfirmation of Schiano di Pepe in his position. Already a member since 2021, his mandate was extended for a four more years.
