COP27

UniGe is one of the organizers of three side events of the COP27, the 27th United Nations Climate Change conference that started from 6 November and shall continue until 18 November 2022 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

«In this historical moment, when the climate crisis occurs with energy and economic crisis, universities shall represent a reliable partner where to look for knowledge, solutions and future prospects», said Adriana Del Borghi, Vice-Chancellor for sustainability of the University of Genoa, who will participate at the COP27 and will chair a side event about the role of universities in supporting institutions in the pursuit of net-zero emissions. During the event, co-organized by the Italian University Network for Sustainable development (RUS) and the UK Universities Climate Network and scheduled on Wednesday November 16, at 10:30-12:30 at the Italian Pavilion (https://www.mite.gov.it/pagina/cop27), a “Re-Generation platform” will be launched. This ecologic regenerative platform, combining business and territories, is the evolution of the eCO2care VER Registry, the first registry of voluntary carbon credits completely public and managed by the University of Genoa since 2008. «The platform goes beyond the concept of offsetting moving towards a regenerative model, by introducing a voluntary system that will facilitate access to credit for those companies that start to support the ecological regeneration of territories» continued Michela Gallo, professor of mitigation and adaptation to climate change and co-founder of Tetis Institute – the Genoese university’s spin off specialist in sustainability metrics – who will present the platform to be proposed at institutional level as regenerative business model.

The second academic event “Universities as Key Solutions Providers: Leveraging our Local and Global Networks for Innovation”, organized through the Italian University Network for Sustainable development (RUS), has been recognized as official COP27 side event and will be held on November 17, 2022, at 13:15-14:45. During this event, universities throughout the world will discuss their role towards future generations and industry, civil society organizations, governments.

The Vice-Chancellor Del Borghi will also represent the Liguria Region at the side event “Global citizenship education and resilience: Strengthening the sustainability of territories with global citizenship” organized by a cooperation among five Regions, Abruzzo, Liguria, Marche, Sardinia and Umbria, where intersectoral strategies, actions and best practices concerning the sustainable development policies, climate change and global citizenship education will be pointed out through the six ACE (Action for Climate Empowerment) pillars and realized in collaboration with the University of Genoa. The event will take place on Tuesday November 15, at 10:30-12:30 at the Italian Pavilion (https://www.mite.gov.it/pagina/cop27).
