delegazione UniGe a Palermo 2022

Simone Botta and Antonino Carbone, delegates of the Rector for the "University for Legality" project and for relations with the Falcone Foundation, together with student representatives Dalia Raafat (Academic Senate) and Carlo Raggi (Academic Senate), Margherita Valle (University Evaluation Team) and Greta Gambarotto (Equal Opportunity Committee), at the Foro Italico in Palermo, on the occasion of the XXX anniversary of the Capaci and Via D'Amelio massacres, in which Judges Giovanni Falcone, Paolo Borsellino, Francesca Morvillo and the agents of their escorts lost their lives.

The delegation from the University of Genoa accompanied the Minister of University and Research, Maria Cristina Messa, in her speech during "1992-2022. Everyone's Memory," live on Rai 1 and in the presence of the Head of State.

President of the Republbica, Sergio Mattarella, in his concluding speech, recalled Judges Falcone and Borsellino and added:

"The avant-garde, lucidly "prophetic" visions of Falcone were not always understood; indeed, in some cases they were opposed even by widespread attitudes in the judiciary itself, which over time, overcoming errors, has been able to make them a common heritage and value them. Even the Judiciary has been amended to give greater prominence to the objective professional qualities of the magistrate as opposed to the criterion of mere seniority, which is not suitable to meet the needs of the Judiciary.

An important lesson for the future should be drawn from these dramatic experiences: avoid taking necessary measures only when emergency conditions arise. It is the duty of institutions to anticipate and act in time, without having to wait for dramatic events to occur in order to be forced to intervene. It is this awareness that should constantly guide the action of the institutions to honor the memory of the servants of the state who paid with their lives for the protection of the values on which our Republic is founded."
