Published on the prestigious international journal Virchows Archiv the results of the study on the lungs of severe COVID patients photographed with the new transmission electron microscope (TEM), provided by the University of Genoa.

The study, the result of an international collaboration in which the Policlinico San Martino participates and conducted by the team of theLaboratory of Imaging and Cellular Electron Microscopy of the University of Genoa, coordinated by Prof.Katia Cortese, supports the hypothesis that it is the altered inflammatory and immune response of patients against the virus or parts of it that triggers a chain reaction that damages the lungs and is also reflected in other organs.

Key to the realization of the study is the acquisition of the new TEM, which renewed the Laboratory's existing instrumentation, thanks to the contribution of UniGe and the School of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences (Call 2018 - Large Instrumentation).
