PRESENTAZIONE

Molecular  Pathology 6 credits (CFU) in the spring period, is a mandatory exam in the 2nd year of the MHB course.

OBIETTIVI E CONTENUTI

OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI

This course aims at providing deep knowledge of the molecular mechanisms underlying the most important human diseases. The alterations of structures, functions and control mechanisms in degenerative pathologies as well as in neoplastic transformations will be studied at molecular, cellular and tissue level. Students will be able to use and apply this knowledge both in research activity and in clinical laboratory

PROGRAMMA/CONTENUTO

 

Cell adaptations: modifications of cell growth and differentiation. Atrophy, hypoplasia, hypertrophy, metaplasia.

Cell injury:  hypoxic/ischemic damage, chemical damage, free radical damage.

Cellular responses to stress: alteration of lysosoms, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, cytoskeleton.

Cell death: necrosis/apoptosis

Cell and tissue degenerations: primary dysfunctions/intracellular accumulations/extracellular accumulations/pathological pigmentations.

Liver pathologies: Steatosis, Fibrosis, Cirrhosis

Hemosiderosis, Wilson Disease.

Amyloidosis

Atherosclerosis: pathogenesis and sequelae

Hemostasis and thrombosis

Bleeding diathesis: congenital and acquider disorders. CID

Vascular pathologies: edema, embolism, thrombosis, infarction, shock

Anemias (congenital and acquired), leucopoenia, leukocytosis, leukaemia

Diabetes: pathogenesis and sequelae

Nervous system pathologies: epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, tetanus (overview)

Parkinson Disease  and Alzheimer Disease: histological features and pathogenetic mechanisms

Neoplasia:

Tumor atypias. Metastasis

Benign tumors and cancers. histological classification. TNM system

Molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes

Carcinogenic compounds, radiations, biological agents

Immune system and cancer (overview)
