OVERVIEW

Conditions affecting perception, mood, emotions and ideation represents, in their most severe forms, a major cause of distress and inability worldwide. Starting from the mid XX century, pharmacological research has achieved significant advancements in the therapy of these disorders either in terms of disease modification either control of symptoms. Pharmacological control of most symptoms of psychiatric disorders is produced by restoring the neurochemical unbalance that underlies these diseases, indicating neurotransmitter release and receptor modulation as major targets for present and future neuropharmacology

Of particular relevance for students, pharmacological characterization of the mechanisms underlying neurotransmitter release, receptor modulation and neuronal plasticity provides a significant contribution to the comprehension of anatomical and neurochemical dynamics that govern the functioning of central and peripheral nerve systems.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to provide the students with knowledge about the main classes of drugs active on the central nervous system. The course will be focused to study the main pharmacological strategies used to modulate the neurochemical and behavioral responses to affect the pathogenetic mechanisms of the main CNS diseases.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The student will be able to understand the mechanisms of action through which drugs affect synaptic transmission and the role of receptor modulation in such as effect. Morever, the student will be aware of the current cellular and molecular alterations responsible of principal CNS diseases and how the drugs can interfere with thes epathogenetic mechanisms.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

1) Mechanism of pain trasmission to the CNS, antalgic drugs (opioids, adjuvant drugs)

2) Anti-parkinson drugs

3) Cannabinoids

4) antiepileptic drugs

5) anxiolytic and hypnotic drugs

6) antipsychotic drugs

7) antidepressant drugs

Assessment methods

The students' acquisition of the Neuropharmacology notions will be evaluated through an interview in English. The student will have to demonstrate the knowledge of the molecular bases of the CNS diseases and how the drugs intefere with.
