AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course purpose is to introduce the student to mechatronic design and development including mechanics measurements and control. The course is based on lectures, to introduce methods and techniques, and experimentation. The main goal is the development of a mechatronics device that requires custom mechanics, designed and 3D printed also, custom electronics and control system programming. Final competences will be:

  • Functional design of a mechatronics device with integration of mechanics measurements and control
  • Programming of a complete control code for a mechatronic device including advanced systems such as RT systems and FPGA
  • Design of testing protocols and their application to the realized device, with critical evaluation of the results.

Teaching methods

Lectures integrated with experimental activities in the Lab carried out in small students groups under instructor guide.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  • Integrated design of mechatronic systems
  • Selection and sizing of electrical actuators for mechatronics
  • Design and prototyping of mechanical parts by 3D printing
  • Development of algorithms based on the mechanical models (kinematic and dynamic)
  • Integration, test and validation of the mechatronic system

Exam description

The final verification includes:

  •             A project report associated with the mechatronic device developed in small groups
  •             Final device functionalities demonstration
  •             Overall project discussion with the instructors

Assessment methods

Final evaluation includes, besides device functionalities and comprehension of the applied methods, report and oral discussion quality and proper technical language, and critical thinking skills.
