AIMS AND CONTENT

Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures on the topics of the program, including dimensioning examples. The exercises will include revisions of the projects, independently developed by the students, in order to examine specific issues related to the design and to the materials choice required for the structures and equipment considered in the projects.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will provide the basic notions related to the design of structures of nautical interest with reference to the characteristics of the materials and technologies used in shipbuilding.

Introduction to the course: general aspects of structural design, choice of materials and technologies. Materials and properties of nautical  interest. Selection criteria; performance indexes.
Beam-hull model. Examples of stress evaluation.
Metals and polymers; environmental issues. Composites - matrices; relationships between properties, processes, environment.
Regulations and standards; hull design.
Composites - reinforcements; architecture and mechanical characteristics; technologies, joints, testing.
Loads on the hull, equipment and their dimensioning.
Demonstrations / practical exercises in the laboratory (in person or on video); composite production and assembly technologies. Characterization testing and control methods.
