OVERVIEW

The course is an introduction to botanical sciences and plant ecology applied to the management, planning and design of the sustainable and resilient landscape

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course students: will develop an overview of plants as a living element of the project. They will be able to evaluate aspects related to the key role of plants in landscape design and planning with particular reference to resilience to climate change and environmental sustainability; they will be able to recognize the main species characteristic of the phytocoenoses of the Italian landscape; they will have the basic knowledge to evaluate which plants to use in landscape-friendly interventions, referring to the ecological characteristics and the distribution of the species in the different terrestrial environments.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • knowledge of characteristics and performance of the plant component in green and blue infrastructures
  • knowledge for the development and design of a sustainable landscape, from the garden to the macro scale
  • knowledge of nursery material, performance, quality chosen
  • knowledge of the ecosystem services and inefficiencies provided by urban greenery (atmospheric pollution mitigation, risks of the use of allergenic plants, etc.);
  • knowledge of greenery to be used in sustainable landscape design.
  • assessment of aspects related to the key role of plants in landscape design and planning with particular reference to resilience to climate change and environmental sustainability;
  • basic knowledge to evaluate which plants to use in landscape-friendly interventions

Teaching methods

The course contents are acquired through frontal teaching and field activities.

Field activities and surveys in urban parks, historic and botanical gardens complete the activities carried out in the classroom with direct observation and identification of plant species.

EXAMS

Exam description

The exam consists of a written test and an oral examination.

Please refer to the specific AulaWeb application for any updates on courses due to changes in the health and epidemiological situation.

Assessment methods

The written test is specifically aimed at verifying the learning of botany applied to landscape design and planning: the main features related to the recognition of the main species described during lessons and field trips, the plant ecology and landscape ecology and the use of plants as a living element of design.

• The oral focuses on the whole program and aims to verify the ability to integrate the different aspects - theoretical and practical - discussed during the year.

Please refer to the specific AulaWeb application for any updates on courses due to changes in the health and epidemiological situation.
