INTEGRATED RISK ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT
AIMS AND CONTENT
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The course will address the aspects of risk assessment with a multidisciplinary approach. the definition of risk and damage and general methodologies for the calculation of standard parameters in the risk assessment procedures (eg. PML and AAL) will be firstly analyzed. Then the problem of defining and mapping exposure to different types of risk will be then addresses as well as the evaluation of vulnerability of single structures and interconnected systems. Single-risk and multi–risk methods of assessment of exposure and vulnerability will be analized. Finally, the most common methodologies and international platforms used for risk assessment will be studied with some practical applications. From the point of view of risk management, the different risk reduction strategies will be addressed: structural, non-structural, the concept of residual risk, real-time (EWS, recovery) and deferred time (planning) management.
AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
The course aims to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and the methodological basis for the mapping and integrated assessment of natural risks to support all phases of the risk management cycle.
The student must be able to understand how to perform a single and multi-risk assessment with a probabilistic approach. It should also be able to understand the methodology of risk assessment at different spatial scales (local-national-regional). For this reason, practical exercises will be carried out with the aid of technological platforms for the integrated assessment of risk scenarios, which will put the student in contact with the problems that can be encountered in real situations.
A special part of the course will be dedicated to the analysis of the contribution of earth observation technologies for mapping and risk assessment, with specific focus on flooding and practical exercises.
A further part will be dedicated to risk management in emergency situations, with an outline of early warning systems and the creation of event scenarios.
At the end of the course the students will be able to face the problem of the assessment and management of natural risks at various spatial scales, to support the different phases of the emergency management.
