OVERVIEW

The study of the motion of a fluid and its interaction with structures of different types (wind on skyscrapers, sea waves on breakwaters, flood waves on piles of a bridge) can be addressed experimentally, theoretically or numerically. Theoretical and numerical analyzes are based on models and equations that descend from the fundamental principles of physics. The course illustrates the equations, the boundary conditions and the simplified models used to determine the motion of a fluid and the forces it exerts on the bodies it flows around

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module of Fluid Mechanics is aimed at describing the fundamental principles and at obtaining the equation  that govern the motion of a fluid motion. Moreover, during the course, some simple problems of practical interest are formulated and solved

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course describes the procedures that allow the correct formulation of the problem and lead to the equations and boundary conditions necessary for the determination of the three-dimensional motions of incompressible fluids around bodies of arbitrarily shape with the aim of quantifying the different components of the force that the fluid exerts on the body. The course also provides the theoretical basis for subsequent courses that address typical problems of civil engineering such as wind engineering and maritime construction
