MOBILITY, INFRASTRUCTURE AND PLANNING
AIMS AND CONTENT
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The course aims to provide the tools to assess the impacts, in terms of congestion, pollution and exclusion, of transport policies. Introduces key elements of transport planning and multiple frameworks of understanding travel behavior and therefore people’s decisions. Establishes a mapping between travel behavior, theory and transport policy. Presents a spectrum of instruments for positively influencing behavior and improving welfare. Some case studies will be analyzed, such as: London congestion charging and some European policies in favor of multimodal transport, including the introduction of automatic and connected vehicles in urban mobility.
AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
The aim of the course is to provide students with a general overview of the models used to reproduce the traveler choices and the tools to positively influence them. Learning outcome: ability to estimate impacts of transport policies and to critically analyze the limits of the assessed impacts.
Teaching methods
The course includes:
- Ex-cathedra lectures
- Hands-on sessions, devoted to exemplify, through supervised exercises, demos, and case studies, the topics
SYLLABUS/CONTENT
Key elements of transport planning:
- Transport Demand: the journeys that occur in a certain time interval in a given territory.
- Transport Supply: the infrastructures (roads, parking lots and railway network) and their organizational elements (rules for road traffic and parking; timetables and fares for public transport) that allow to move around the urban area.
- Cost of transport from the point of view: of the user, the operator and the community (externalities).
Travel behavior models for understanding the mobility choices and patterns:
- Aggregated and disaggregated models. Behavioral models like random utility models.
Tools to positively influence travel behavior and improve well-being.
Case studies, like:
- London congestion charging;
- European policies in favor of multimodal transport and the introduction of automatic and connected vehicles in urban mobility.
