OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide the basic elements necessary for the hydraulic design of structures for water intake, control and conveyance, both for open channels and pressure flow systems.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student is expected to have the basic knowledge to design hydraulic structures for water intake, conveyance and contro, including open-channel and pressure flow system. 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The learning outcomes of the course concern the design of hydraulic structures for intake, control and transport of water, with reference to:

- Various motion applications in pressurized systems

- Reservoirs and hydraulic infrastructures

- Pipelines and tunnels

- Control Flow weir

- Channels

- Floodways and diversion dams

- Spillways

- Flood retention basins.

At the end of the course the student acquires the ability to hydraulically design structures for intake, control and transport of the water resource

 

PREREQUISITES

The course pre-requisite is the knowledge of the basic contents of the Hydraulics 1 and 2 courses, compulsory in the 2nd year of the CL3 programme, with particular reference to steady flow in open channels as well as the pressurized flow.

Teaching methods

The lectures are organized in about 35 hours of theory and in about 25 hours of practice

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course contents can be summarized as follows:

Applied hydraulic transient in under pressure systems: transient regime (waterhammer phenomenon) in pumping stations and turbines, opening and closing of control valves, introduction to hydraulic turbines, transient regime with air chamber, tunnel–surge tank system

Reservoirs: Notes on the dam typologies – weir spillways – Bottom-withdrawal spillways – Intake hydraulic structures – Weir dam profile –Energy dissipators in dam – Rules and security systems.

Control flow weir: types, design flow, exploitation curve, intake and control structures, design criteria.

Pipelines and Tunnels: types and design, static analysis (introduction to) Channel: types and design, covering.

Channels: typology and sizing, coatings.

Floodways and diversion dams – spillways - flood retention basins.

EXAMS

Exam description

Oral and reports on exercises

Assessment methods

Exercises related to the main issues outlined above are planned. Exercises has to be presented in form of written report that will be discussed during the final exam. The final exam consists, in addition to the discussion of the reports, in questions to be answered orally concerning the entire program, in particular on the topics not covered exhaustively in the exercises.

50% of the summative assessment of the course is based on the presentation of the reports. 50% of the assessment is based on the outcome of the oral questions.
