MEDICAL IMAGING FOR RADIOTHERAPY
The course has the aim to teach and make the dental students familiar with the science of diagnostic imaging (i.e. intraoral radiography, panoramic imaging; skull lateral teleradiography and orthodontic cephalometry; CT; cone-beam CT; dentascan; MRI), including the core principles of image production and image interpretation analysis. Students will learn the clinical indication and appropriate use of imaging in the orofacial region. Special emphasis will be put on radioprotection principles and the main procedures of oral and maxillofacial radiation therapy.
The main objective of the course is the achivement of professional competences related to the science of diagnostic imaging, including the core principles of image production, interpretation and clinical indications for the dental student. Principles of radioprotection and radiation therapy will also be addressed.
AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students trained in the course will acquire the following skills:
- Familiarize with the use of conventional and advanced radiographic modalities in the oral and maxillofacial areas.
- Know the basics of physics and technology of the diagnostic imaging modalities used in the oral and maxillofacial area.
- Be able to determine and prescribe the appropriate imaging technique based on clinical exam and medical/dental histories
- Be able to interpret radiographs and any other imaging examination related to modern imaging techniques.
- Be aware of radiation safety and protection.
- Be aware of the main procedures and side effects of oral and maxillofacial radiation therapy

The examination consists of a written test based on multiple choice questions (4 answers/1 correct) and an oral test. In this latter test, the examiners will show each candidate one or more cases of oral and/or maxillofacial radiology. The student will be asked to describe and interpret the imaging findings and make the diagnosis. Passing the written test is required to access the oral exam. The course does not include ongoning evaluations or midterm exams.
The written test will evaluate the candidate’s achievement of theoretical learning. The oral exam will then test the candidate's ability to apply theorical learning to practice by means of a real life interactive discussion of imaging cases pertinent to the oral and/or maxillofacial area.
