OVERVIEW

The course aims to analyze in depth the various forms of sustainable tourism focusing on the communication of tourist destinations and tourist regions and, specifically, images, website, social networks and storytelling. In addition, it will be discussed the communication methods presented by the best known tourist guides on the market and the most famous trailers of tourism sponsorship. 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Communication and sharing (through social media) of the tourist experience play a central role in the diffusion of a conscious sensitivity and interest in forms and approaches of sustainable tourist that can contribute to the development of the territories. The course aims to contribute to the understanding of the strategic task that communication can have in the tourism development of the territories and in the diffusion of sensitivity and awareness regarding tourism sustainability. The course has as main objectives: - to contribute to the understanding of the strategic task of communication (also in a diachronic perspective) for the tourism development of territories, for example illustrating the processes and spatial effects of information flows at different geographical scales; - to encourage the decryption and critical and conscious use of tourism communication via the web; - to examine (also with a workshop approach) some examples of sustainable tourist typologies, such as experiential tourism and voluntourism, which use territorial storytelling and sharing of the tourist experience through social media.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Communication and sharing (through social media) of the tourist experience play a central role in spreading a conscious awareness and interest in sustainable tourist forms and approaches that can contribute to the development of territories.

The course has as main objectives:

- to contribute to the understanding of the strategic task of communication (also in a diachronic perspective) for the tourist development of territories, for example by illustrating the processes and spatial effects of information flows at different geographical scales;

- to favour the decoding and the critical and conscious use of the tourist communication conveyed through the web;

 - examine (also with a laboratory approach) some examples of sustainable tourism typologies that use territorial storytelling and the sharing of the tourism experience through social media.

Finally, the course aims to contribute to the dissemination of sensitivity and awareness about tourism sustainability.

 

Teaching methods

The Course includes frontal lessons in the platform online Microsoft Teams, in which slides and videos will be used.

Group discussions on representative case studies and problem solving are also planned.

The use of aulaweb is foreseen, where materials presented and discussed in lessons on the geographical instruments used will be available.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course aims to analyze in depth the various forms of sustainable tourism focusing on the communication of tourist destinations and tourist regions and, specifically, images, website, social networks and storytelling. In addition, it will be discussed the communication methods presented by the best known tourist guides on the market and the most famous trailers of tourism sponsorship. 

In this sense will be provided and discussed numerous examples of communication, both online and offline, carried out by tourist destinations around the world, with the aim of promoting the territory and sustainable tourism.

Finally, the limits and expectations of the sustainable tourism experience will be discussed, as well as how geo-anthropological reflection has contributed to tourism literature through the authentic/inauthentic dichotomy, at the basis of the relationship between tourist/tourism and local population, which is therefore fundamental for the setting up of tourism communication strategies.

The text, which consists of a critical elaboration of the topics covered in the texts and not a simple summary of the chosen text, must be sent to the teacher at least 15 days before the exam date.

-For foreign students: on request the teacher will make available ad hoc material in English.

-Those who choose to enrol in this course as a "single training activity for the purposes of teaching qualification" or otherwise are requested to contact the teacher to agree on a personalized program based on the training curriculum of the student.

Exam description

 

For frequent and non-attendance students: 

-Oral test on the course program. 

There will also be an end-of-course oral test at the end of the lessons reserved for those who have attended at least 70% of the meetings (further information will be provided by the teacher in the first lessons of the course).

The oral exam will be evaluated on the basis: 

a) Knowledge of the topics covered in the course (65%)

(b) Quality of oral exposure/ability to present arguments and critical approach to the discipline (25%)

c) Specific vocabulary mastery (10%)
