AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course proposes the physical and aerodynamic modeling of the sail propulsion and the sailing boat modeling. General principles of Physics and Fluid-dynamics are presented, giving also a correlation with sail materials and techniques for sails construction.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The purpose of the module is to provide the general concepts of the fluid dynamic interaction of a sailing vessel in order to present the operating principle of a sailing boat.

The fundamental concepts of fluid dynamics are introduced and then analyzed in greater detail in the specific application of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics so that the student can make design choices justified by the physics of the problem.

The notions of hydrostatics allow the student to design a stable and safe boat.

The hydrodynamic modeling will allow you to make design choices for the sizing of the appendages as well as determine the performance of the boat.

The aerodynamic modeling defines the aerodynamic actions on the sail plan and allows to correctly dimension the sail plan.

At the end of the course, the student will be able to evaluate the performance of a boat, evaluating the correct weight distribution and the sizing of all surfaces hit by the wind or immersed in water.

Teaching methods

Theoretical lessons on the course topics by means of the slide show.

Practical exercises for the evaluation of the static balance of the boat and the evaluation of the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic forces using Excel, Rhinoceros, Orca3D (or similar) software.

Exam description

First part: delivery of the ship weight list and static balance.

Second part: discussion of the boat's design and related sizing choices of the sail plan and appendices with references to theoretical concepts seen during the course.
