PRODUCTION ENGINEERING
OVERVIEW
Manufacturing technology module introduces students to the fundamental topics for the study of the production processes used by manufacturing industries, specifically metal cutting processes.
AIMS AND CONTENT
LEARNING OUTCOMES
This module provides the tools to study mechanical metrology (including surface micro- and nano-geometry), metal cutting, considering cinematic and dynamic theoretical models, the machine tools, their kinematics, structures, the generation of forms, the transducers and the basic principle of the machine tools numerical control.
AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
The student at the end of the course will be able to
- take measurements of lengths using the instruments typically available in the manufacturing industries shop floor,
- understand and calculate the main parameters to characterize surface microgeometry,
- employ simple theoretical models (kinematic, dynamic, thermodynamic) to assess, assuming orthogonal cutting hypothesis, forces, powers, temperature as a function of cutting parameters,
- deterministically evaluate the tool life,
- classify and select the materials of the tools on the basis of their chemical and mechanical characteristics,
- understand the main kinematic machine tool geometries, the paths generations of first and second order, simple and composite trajectories,
- know the main elements that constitute the machine tools, to understand the principles at the basis of some simple transducers and of the machine tools numerical control
