OVERVIEW

The course is composed of a theoretical module and practical exercises. The theoretical module deals with language variation in a sociolinguistic perspective.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims at giving students advanced knowledge and competences both in terms of tools for metalinguistic analysis and in-depth analysis of specific points, including different LSP. It is accompanied by practical language courses, held by native French teachers, at an advanced level.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

- express knowledge about linguistic variation phenomena;

- recognize and interpret such phenomena in the context of French by using linguistic theory on variation;

- manipulate texts which present variation phenomena.

PREREQUISITES

Students will have language competences in French of level B2.

They will be able to sit for the exam of third year theoretical module only if they have passed the second year one. The same applies to the exams relating to the practical exercises. For furthre information, see the exams regulations on the French section page (http://www.lingue.unige.it/?op=sections&sub=view&section=4).

Teaching methods

For the first semester, lessons with Aulaweb and Teams, groupwork.

Due to possible anti-Covid restrictions, the course may be taught entirely online.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will deal with variation phenomena in their diatopic, diastratic, diaphasic and diamesic dimensions (therefore in a synchronic perspective) within the French speaking world.
Texts (belonging to different genres and media, such as literature, comics, film, etc.) will be analysed.

The theoretical module is accompanied by practical exercices in French (Manipulation du texte écrit – Mme Bianchini; Manipulation du texte oral, Mme Brunin). Further information is available on the web page of the French section (http://www.lingue.unige.it/?op=sections&sub=view&section=4).

Exam description

The theoretical module exam aims at verifying the acquisition of theoretical knowledge about linguistic variation in French and the ability to apply this knowledge to the specific analysis of a text. The student will have to be able to identify and analyze the phenomena that appear in a specific text, using theoretical knowledge in an appropriate way.

The exams concerning the practical exercises aim at testing the students’ ability to understand oral and written texts, interact with other speakers, reformulate, and express articulate and complex personal opinions, at level C1 of the common European framework for languages.

Due to possible anti-Covid restrictions, exams may be entirely or partially online.

The student will have to prove to be able to:

  • identify variation phenomena in the text given for the exam;
  • organize them in a structured way and analyze them;
  • sum up basical theoretical knowledge. Without the demonstration he/she possesses this knowledge the mark will not be higher than 26/30.

Practical exercises: oral exam (manipulation of oral text) and written exam (manipulation of written text) aiming at assessing the ability  to understand texts, written and oral, to interact with other speakers, to reformulate, to express complex and nuanced personal opinions; all of this at level C1.
