OVERVIEW

The course aims to deepen the themes and problems of the modern age in relation to the spatial context of our peninsula, where historical events contributed to define a certain political-institutional structure and a certain socio-economic framework. The basic knowledge will be the starting point for the development of reflections on the pre-unification panorama that highlight the differences between the various areas, but at the same time stimulate the search for strong systemic interconnections.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to deepen the themes and problems related to the history of the Italian peninsula and its states during the centuries of the ancient regime, through the definition and discussion of different historiographical traditions. The various aspects of a political-institutional, socio-economic and cultural nature will be examined with a diachronic approach and following specific paths for the different state realities. Direct exercises on the sources will be proposed in order to stimulate a critical approach and to understand the actual development of historiographical pathways on the subject.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

There are three objectives that the teaching has set itself:

1) to introduce students to the history of the ancient Italian States, against the background of the more general modern history they have already studied (at different levels) in high schools and in the first university cycle

2) to reflect on the similarity (and specificities) that a comparison between the events of the ancient Italian States and those of the other European States of the same centuries can bring to light

3) to learn the historiographical traditions of the various state contexts and to present the panorama of the sources on which they are based

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of Italian history between the 15th and 18th centuries

Frontal lectures aimed at providing an overview of the history of the Italian peninsula in a diachronic key between the late Middle Ages and the end of the ancien régime and to deepen the history of individual states. Seminars with the use of sources to deepen the thematic aspects.

The basic manual, for the preparation of the first module, is that of G. Greco, M. Rosa, Storia degli antichi Stati italiani, Laterza, Roma-Bari (students attending this book can replace it with the notes of the lessons).

In addition, for a review of the history of modern Italy, we recommend that those who do not attend the reading of the manual of Modern History by Carlo Capra (Mondadori), chapters 6, 9, 13, 21 (in the third edition of the book the chapters became 7, 10, 14, 22). Students attending this part will be submitted during the lessons, and will be able to use their notes for the exam.

Exam description

Oral: one or more questions on the text of the first module (Greco-Rosa), possibly supplemented by questions on the general history of the Italian peninsula described in the chapters of Carlo Capra manual (in the case of those attending the interview it could be about the contents of the lessons); followed by one or more questions on the texts assigned for the preparation of the second module.

Assessment methods

In the examination, which will take place in oral form, one or more specific subjects contained in the texts indicated will be proposed to the examiner. The examiner will be asked to illustrate these topics critically, in a correct and articulate manner, and using appropriate language; his or her ability to establish significant links with other topics dealt with in the same text or dealt with during the lessons (in the case of participants) will also be verified.
