OVERVIEW

It is a 6 CFU physical chemistry course for students of the Master of Science in medical and pharmaceutical biotechnology.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquiring rigorous methodology to describe as accurately as possible the fundamental phenomena that are the basis of chemical systems; knowing how to understand and use the minimum mathematical formalism required to interpret them.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Thermodynamics

System definition, path definition, definition of state function; enunciation of the three principles

first principle: heat, work, U, definition of H; Joule experience;

isobar, isotherm, cycle Hess, equations of Kirchhoff relationship Mayer;  cycle on the isobaric-isotherm;

second principle: definition of entropy according to classic thermodynamics;

definition of entropy according to statistical thermodynamics; dependence of S by T and V;

definition of G function; the Van't Hoff  isotherm and isobar;

The G applications:

osmotic pressure; Clausius Clapeyron equation,

boiling point elevation and freezing point depression, pH, pK,

metabolism;

mixtures: ΔG, ΔS, ΔH; basic concepts of binary mixtures on ideal conditions and diversions.

 

Molecular Spectroscopy

The electromagnetic spectrum, the wave parameters;

dualism of electromagnetic radiation; introduction to vibrational spectroscopy: IR;

IR: the harmonic model, anharmonicity correction, internal and symmetry  coordinates;

Raman spectroscopy;

electronic spectroscopy,  Beer's Law, UV-visible, basic concepts of  fluorescence and phosphorescence;

brief presentation of instrumentation (FTIR);

 

Kinetics

Introduction and definition of reaction rate;

reactions case studies;

reversible reactions;

methods to evaluate the order of reaction;

influence of T on the reaction rate constant k

enzymatic catalysis
