OVERVIEW

The course, held in English, requires previous knowledge of fundamental elements of public international law and wishes to deepen the principles, the organs, the functions and the acts of the most important international organisations, amongst which particular relevance will be given to the United Nations.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is aimed at analyzing the governing law and principles, organs, functions of the most significant existing intergovernmental International Organizations. An adequate knowledge of the fundamental elements of International Law (i.e. international subjectivity, sources, immunity, resolution of international litigation) is the necessary starting point for understanding the functioning of the International Organizations and, therefore, to follow the course. Among the latters, specific attention will be devoted to the United Nations and to the World Trade Organization. For the students who will follow the lectures, further activities are provided, such as (i) power point presentations on subjects of topical interests and (ii) (ii) simulation of the activities of the bodies of the United Nations (in light of a possible participation to the seminar “Genoa Model United Nations” - GEMUN).

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

In its first part, classes will provide students with methodological instruments and theoretical foundations necessary to understand, contextualise - also with a policy-making and problems solving perspective, 

- rulers on the functioning of the United Nations

- competences of the United Nations for the mainteinance of international peace and security

In its second part, classes will provide students with methodological instruments and theoretical foundations necessary to understand, contextualise - also with a policy-making and problems solving perspective, 

 

- rules on the functioning of the World Trade Organisation 

- rules on international commerce

- rules on dispute settlement for breach of laws on international commerce

Teaching methods

Frontal lectures, with PPTs.

Students attending at least 75% of classes will be examined with i) discussion of the topics; ii) written test, and iii) students PPT presentations. Competences can also be verified during oral exams.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course, held in English, deepens the study of the rules and provisions concerning the functioning of international organisations. In particular, subject of studies will be the acquisition of the membership, the functions and acts of the mejor international organisations.

EXAMS

Exam description

The exam is oral, and held in English. Students are usually asked three questions on topics of the programme.

Students attending at least 75% of classes can alternatively be examined with i) discussion of the topics; ii) written test, and iii) students PPT presentations. 

Assessment methods

Both written and oral examination will verify that students have acquired theoretical and practical knowledge on

- rulers on the functioning of the United Nations

- competences of the United Nations for the mainteinance of international peace and security

- rules on the functioning of the World Trade Organisation 

- rules on international commerce

- rules on dispute settlement for breach of laws on international commerce

- linquistic and technical vocabulary to work in highly professional and international enviroments
