APPLIED HYGIENE
OVERVIEW
The course studies the organisation, functional and dimensional requirements of the hospital and the spatial interrelationships and links between diagnosis and treatment services, in the light of national regulations and the quality standards of international guidelines. It provides knowledge of the main hygienic problems of hospital environments in relation to the health risk for the patient and healthcare workers and preventive solutions.
AIMS AND CONTENT
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The course illustrates the hospital characteristics, referring to functional and dimensional requirements, spatial relationships and connections between the various services for diagnosis and treatment, in the light of the legislation and quality standards of the latest international guidelines. The course covers the main issues of hospital environment in relation to the patient health risk assessment and management, (eg, Legionella, Aspergillus, etc.) resulting from water and ventilation systems, and the presence of yards in the hospital areas according to the most current international guidelines.
AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
Attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities and individual study will allow the student:
- to know the structural, organisational and functional characteristics and requirements of the hospital
- to know and identify potential health risks for patients and healthcare workers
- be familiar with the operating methods aimed at preventing and managing health risks.

Teaching is divided into frontal lessons given by the teacher
SYLLABUS/CONTENT
The course programme includes the presentation and discussion of the following topics:
The hospital and its evolution over time; the regulations of the sector: the authorization and accreditation requirements.
The new concept of the hospital
The containment of biological, chemical and physical risks.
The particular needs of some critical environments: operating departments and intensive care.
Air, hygiene issues relating to ventilation systems
Water, hospital water networks and their hygienic characteristics and the control of the infectious risk for patients and operators.
The construction site and the prevention of Aspergillus risk

The notes taken in class and the material made available on the website are sufficient for the exam preparation.

Assessment methods
The oral exam will mainly focus on the topics covered during the frontal lessons and will aim to assess whether the student has reached an adequate level of basic knowledge and the ability to apply it within different hospital contexts.
