OVERVIEW

The course of Elements and Sources of Modern History aims to provide the student of the first year a framework of the themes and problems of the centuries of the ancien régime (XVI-XVIII), as well as a presentation of the working method of the historian and the developments of historiography starting from the progressive professionalization of the discipline.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to introduce the student to the study of modern history: on the one hand by introducing and outlining in a preliminary way the concepts, themes and problems of the centuries of modernity; on the other hand by providing guidance for the understanding of the historian's work and for the knowledge of the tools he used (sources, methodology, historiography).

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The objectives of the course are twofold:

1) to understand the structural aspects of the society of the ancient regime, in its various fields and in its problems, in order to approach the second year of the course with a safer learning of modern history

2) learn to become familiar with the historiographic lexicon and with the tools of the historian's trade, i.e. the secondary primary sources

EXAMS

Exam description

Oral: one or two questions about the general part (Romagnani), one question about the program related to the sources, one question about the book of your choice. For those attending, the use of arguments and materials from the lessons is considered a note of merit.

An intermediate (optional) test will be held at the end of the first part of the course programme, the one dedicated to the themes (more or less towards the end of October). After this test, the lessons will resume with the second part dedicated to the sources.

Assessment methods

During the examination, which will be held orally, the candidates will be proposed for examination one or more specific topics contained in the texts indicated. The examiner will be asked to illustrate these topics with a critical spirit, in a correct and articulated way, and using appropriate language; his ability to establish significant links with other topics dealt with in the same text or dealt with during the lessons will also be verified (for those who attend)
