OVERVIEW

The course provides the monitoring topic, about territorial or constructed area; the necessary skills are in fact common to both areas and require a masterful training both for the processing phase of the measurement campaigns, or for the interpretation of results.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course aims to provide the theoretical and practical tools for territorial and constructions monitoring. Will be illustrated criteria and methodologies useful to the monitoring, both from the point of view of optimal configuration project through the network simulation techniques, both for the data processing, both for a correct analysis of the results using the statistical inference.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

We will deepen surveying techniques addressed in Geomatics I for high precision measurements such as: level and total station, GNSS/GPS for Post Processing and their integration. Furthermore the photogrammetry technique and laser scanner will be approached for their integration, depending on the specifics of the monitoring object.

Some insights about data processing and analysis will be taken into account, in particular to design more appropriate measuring patterns, to process measurement campaigns also for non-linear equations of observation and interpretation of the results.

Teaching methods

Lectures (30 hours) and practice (20 hours) related to the campaign survey, to the calculation and to the firsts critical analysis.

 

For the processing procedures we give priority to the use free and open source software to provide students.

The instrumental and numerical exercises are particularly useful in learning instrumental operating practices discussed in class, to the processing of measurement campaigns and to the acquisition of the necessary sensitivity for its analysis. Both exercises are needed to compile the technical report that is an integral part of the oral exam.

 

The course is held in Italian but they are available bibliographic references in English; the technical report and the examination can be conducted in English.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Will be discussed criteria and methods useful in the project, processing and analysis of geometric monitoring. In particular will taken into account how to optimize the design of the topographic network through simulation techniques, how to process campaigns with nonlinear observation equations and the analysis of results.

The course complete the instrumental knowledge acquired in the course Geomatics of the first degree, with the GNSS/GPS post-processing precision survey, photogrammetric technique, laser-scanner and their integration, with operational experiences using the instrumentation available at the DICCA laboratories.

 

The measurement campaign will lead to the drafting of a technical report to be carried out in small groups of students, in which critically analyze the survey.

 

As an indication, here are some examples of possible applications that may be subject to (instrumental and/or processing and/or analysis) exercises:

  • monitoring of a bridge subjected to different load tests using high-precision geometric leveling, paying particular attention to thermal effects;

  • continuous monitoring of structures (dams, tunnels, rail and road embankments, bridges, slender structures as well as buildings) and landslide by integration of GNSS/GPS (local) and laser-scanner and/or photogrammetric (distributed) measurements, paying particular attention to seasonal effects observed with satellite techniques GNSS and identification of eventual fissures using the laser scanner and/or the photogrammety;

  • monitoring of complex structures for the quantification of damages (detachment of concrete plates, irons discovered, degradation in the areas of waste water) using a laser scanner and/or photogrammetry integrated with total station and/or GNSS/GPS measurements.

Assessment methods

The examination includes an oral test, with presentation and discussion of the technical report prepared in small groups and on the exercises performed during the course. During the exam the knowledge of some theoretical bases of the monitoring techniques discussed during the course will be assessed.
