OVERVIEW

The course of Clinical Pathology II, III and immunohematology deals with the study of several diseases markers, the study of the tests useful for blood transfusions and hemocomponent storage

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquire the main notions about homeostasis, diabetes, tumoral markers, inflammation markers, cell damage markers, caridiac markers. Acquire basic knowledge about urgence laboratory. Acquire basic knowledge about immunology, genetics, heatic groups; tests of transfusional compatibility; piastrinic and leucocytic antigens; ABO and Rh systems

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Provide the students with the fundamental elements about some of the main classes of diseases markers (e.g. inflammation markers, cell damage markers, tumour markers) measurable in a clinical laboratory

Provide the principles underlie to a) organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, b) main features of autoimmune diseases. This aim focusing on in vitro assays to evaluate donor-recipient compatibility and biological parameters indicating: graft rejection and GVHD, the presence and progression of  autoimmune disease.

Aim of the course is to provide the students with the tools necessary to perform: blood component testing and labeling, collection, preparation, storage and distribution of components from whole blood donations.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge in biology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, general pathology

Teaching methods

Lectures, with any possible dialectic interactions with the students, queries and replies on the next lesson, problem-based learning

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Inflammation markers. Cell damage markers. Renal function markers. Endocrine function markers. Tumour markers. Lipid metabolism markers

Organ and bone marrow transplantation, markers of transplant rejection, graft versus host disease (GVHD), methods to assess donor-recipient compatibility, methods to assess biological parameters during graft rejection and GVHD, basic principle of auto-reactivity, autoimmunity and autoimmune diseases, organ specific autoimmune diseases, autoimmune hepatitis, systemic autoimmune diseases, systemic lupus erythematosus, methods to assess biological parameters and diagnose autoimmune diseases.

EXAMS

Exam description

oral examination

Assessment methods

Each students will be examined about at least two chapter of the program of clinical pathology 2, with questions apt to evaluate his/her knowledge and his/her ability to connect different subject of the program. The knowledge and the definitions of the basic elements must be known in order to consider the examination approved.

The student will be examined answering three queries on procedures and biological parameters relevant in pathological/clinical conditions that are subject of the course of clinical pathology 3. The examination will be passed if the student knows and is able to assess which biological parameters should be studied in those pathological/clinical conditions.

The students will be asked to refer about two groups of theme illustrated during the lessons of immunohematology

In each fields of knowledge the students’ abilities to critically interpret an connect the topics of the exam will be evaluated
