OVERVIEW

 

Philosophies of the Renaissance is a specialized discipline that provides an in-depth knowledge of the main traditions of Renaissance thought. His approach to the authors and their themes is eminently critical-philological.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Renaissance was a period of multiple cultural influences, mainly centered around the revival of classical art and studies. The increasing attention for classical studies had a striking influence on philosophy. The course is meant to present the importance of the vast philosophical production which originated between the 14th and the 16th centuries from many different philosophical currents (and specifically from their relationship with the past).

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Studying in depth the main features of Renaissance philosophy, by addressing a specific issue or by reading a classic.

Develop the capacity for critical confrontation with the classics of Renaissance philosophy.
Identify the main problematic and methodological issues of the history of Renaissance thought.
Increase the abilities of the abstraction and those of choice of the argumentative strategies according to the contexts.
At the end of the course the student will be able to know the mains lines of Renaissance thought; to critically confronted with a classic of the Renaissance thought;  to know the main problematic and methodological points of the history of Renaissance thought.
The student will also have increased their abstraction and argumentative skills, as well as learning how to correctly use previous knowledge and skills by applying them to the Renaissance cultural context, thus developing their personal re-elaboration and content integration skills.
 

PREREQUISITES

The student must have acquired the basic skills of the main periods and the most important figures of Western thought, as well as possessing a precise philosophical vocabulary.

Teaching methods

Frontal and seminar lessons with reading and commentary of the classics in program. During the seminars lessons, students can present some topics related to the course agreed with the teacher.

Humanism and Renaissance
Erasmus and the Devotio moderna 
Erasmus and Luther
Erasmus and the condemnation of war
Moral reform and irenism
The second scholastic and the just war

EXAMS

Exam description

Oral exam. The exam is meant to assess students’ grasp of the topics covered by the course and their ability to link topics with the relevant historical and cultural contexts.

The exam also intends to evaluate the student's argumentative and critical skills.

Assessment methods

 The exam aims to ascertain:

The student's mastery of the issues addressed in the course and his ability to place them correctly in the historical-cultural context (max 15/30);
Critical-argumentative efficacy in exposure (max 5/30).
The ability to recall and use knowledge and skills already possessed by the candidate (max 5/30).
The capacity for personal reprocessing and content integration (up to 5/30).
