OVERVIEW

The course (36 hours)  is for the first-year students of Communication Science. It is subdivided  into two main parts: the first one will focus on the communicative language, the second one  will allow the students to study  professional English.

The course aims at increasing students' knowledge in English language, confirming the B1 intermediate level acquired in their secondary school education.

The course aims to encourage language awareness and to provide some useful metalinguistic instruments for reaching an awareness on the students’ part of their own processes of language learning; indeed, an important objective is to guide students towards autonomous learning. Textual and morphological analysis (including the use of examples of realia taken from various fields of international communication) will be used as practical examples of features of theory.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course is divided into two main parts:  the first part will focus on linguistic  analysis of communicative language with particular attention to the language of  everyday life. Lessons will be held with interactive methods but they require an amount of individual study which may vary depending on the linguistic level of each student. The second part of the course will analyse different text types and genres  related to the media  and it is designed to improve comprehension, simple communication skills and specialist language knowledge.

Assessment methods

The course is assessed through a written exam  and an oral exam. The purpose is to assess reading and comprehension skills, listening and speaking, grammar and vocabulary.
