AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquisition of the basic methods of measurement of physical quantities andf the determination of associated uncertainty.

 

Teaching methods

Lectures on the topics of the course and six laboratory works  of about 4 hours each. For each works it is asked to complete a form in which it must be described the used method, the acquired data and their analysis, the uncertainties.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The experimental method in the natural sciences: 1) scientific method; 2) experimental observations and theories; 3) the scientific experiment and the measures
The measurement concept: 1) measurable quantities; 2) the units of measurement; 3) measuring instruments; 4) types and general behaviors of measuring instruments
The result of the measures: 1) how to communicate the result of a measurement; 2) uncertainty and error; 2) types of measurement error; 3) reproducibility and repeatability.

Laboratory works.
Six small experiments selected to put the student in the condition of the experimenter who, in the complexities of the phenomena, must: 1) disentangle the details useful for the measure from the futile and negligible ones; 2) correct use the tools and instruments; 3)  describe a phenomenon quantitatively by means of the measurenets; 4) define  the uncertainties (errors); 5) communicate the final result of the experiment.
