OVERVIEW

The course gives a general overview to the European Union regulations about wildlife monitoring for conservation and introduces to the estimation of animal abundance by capture-mark recapture techniques and to trend analysis.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will achieve information on different monitoring schemes and in particular on the estimation of population abundance with mark-recapture methods and on analysis of time series. 

TEACHING METHODS

This course uses a combination of lectures, powerpoint presentations, PC simulations and exercices; class and group discussions; field activities.

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Students will achieve information on:

1) European Union regulation and legislative requirements that apply to monitoring for wildlife conservation; 2) relative and absolute population indexes; 3) capture and marking techniques; 4) use of CAPTURE software and TRIM software.

The exams consists of a written multiple choise questions test and an oral examination, all in the same day  

ASSESSMENT METHODS

A written multiple choise questions test (9 questions and 1 problem to be solved with CAPTURE programme) and oral discussion on the main course aguments.
