SYLLABUS/CONTENT

This course provides the students with an introduction to the study of the English novel and poetry of the first half of the twentieth century. The first part will offer an historical-cultural survey of the formal innovations in modernist novels and will contextualize and explain how the new narrative techniques captured the dynamic history of the period. The second part of the course will concentrate mostly on poetry retracing the crucial phases of the critical debate around the construction and reception of the canon. It will show how discussions about the poetic production of war poets have been subject to opposed ideological readings and heated debates over the role, function and language of poetry. The remaining lectures will be dedicated to the analysis of literary texts.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

A complete bibliography and a reading list with critical and reference texts will be provided at the beginning of the course. At the exam students will be expected to know the history of twentieth century English literature.
