OVERVIEW

 

Introduction to the History of Philosophy is a preliminary course which provides the fundamentals of history of modern and contemporary philosophy and analyzes its main figures by providing the necessary context.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Being able to outline the evolution of western philosophy, in a diachronic perspective. Being able to present the origin and development of the main western philosophical categories; being able to analyze the evolution of these categories during the four main periods in history of philosophy (Ancient history, Middle Ages, Modern Age and Contemporary Age). Getting acquainted with the main works of philosophical tradition through the study and commentary of a "classic".

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Getting acquainted with the major modern and contemporary philosophers, their context and their conceptual system.

 

  1. Being able to outline the evolution of western philosophy, in a diachronic perspective.
  2. Being able to present the origin and development of the main western philosophical categories.
  3. Being able to analyze the evolution of these categories in the Modern and Contemporary Ages.
  4. Getting acquainted with the main works of philosophical tradition through the study and commentary of a "classic".

Fundamentals of history of modern and contemporary philosophy. Erasmus's In Praise of Folly: reading and commentary.

Assessment methods

Since the course is designed for first-year students, the oral exam is aimed at assessing the following points: students' grasp of the topics covered during the course and their ability to collocate them in the relevant historical-cultural context; ability to present contents in a clear way; correct use of terminology in relation to authors and texts.
