OVERVIEW

This course includes:

  • a linguistics module focusing on language and language variation in intercultural communication, and introducing Stylistics and Critical Discourse Analysis as tools to analyse texts;
  • a practical English language course at the C2.1 level.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to develop the theoretical study of English language and linguistics with particular reference to social, functional and cognitive aspects, and to develop language competence at Level C2 of the 'Common European Framework of Reference for Languages'.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course aims to

  • provide an accessible and interdisciplinary introduction to language and language variation in intercultural communication;
  • provide students with the basic tools to understand how cultural context affects the use and (mis)interpretation of language;
  • enable students to explain and analyse the power of texts and uncover their deep-seated ideologies.

TEACHING METHODS

The linguistics module is made up of weekly lectures (3 hours a week over 10 weeks in the first semester).

The practical module is made up of weekly classes (4 hours a week over 20 weeks, i.e. 10 weeks per semester).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

English Language II (LM) is divided into two parts, a one-semester linguistics module ("modulo teorico") and a two-semester practical module ("modulo pratico" or "esercitazioni" o "lettorato").

The linguistics module ("modulo teorico") focuses on language and language variation in intercultural communication, and introduces Stylistics and Critical Discourse Analysis as tools to analyse texts. The practical language module aims to bring students to the C2.1 (upper end of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages C1 level). More information about the practical part will be available in the '2017-18 Rules & Regulations, Lettorati list, etc.' folder (in the "documenti" folder on Prof. Cristiano Broccias’s page on the Lingue website) from September.
