## AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course of Fluid Mechanics aims at presenting the fundamental principles and deducing the laws that govern the motion of fluids. Furthermore, during the course, some simple practical problems are formulated and solved and the foundation to tackle more complex problems are laid.

TEACHING METHODS

The course will consist of lectures (about 40 hours) and exercises (about 10 hours).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Continuum approach.
Properties of fluids.
Kinematics of fluids.
Stress tensor.
Cardinal equations of fluid motion.
Elements of thermodynamics.
Boundary conditions.
Constitutive laws.
Navier-Stokes equations.
Laminar flows.
Vorticity dynamics.
Flows at high Reynolds numbers.
Dynamics of inviscid fluids: Bernoulli's theorem.
Irrotational flows.
Conformal transformations.
Boundary layer: basic equations and physical interpretations.
Blasius boundary layer.
Turbulence: equations of the mean motion.
The problem of the closure of turbulent flows and Boussinesq approach.
Outline of the main turbulence models.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam includes only an oral examination which is aimed at ascertaining the degree of knowledge of the topics described during the lectures. Usually, the students will be asked three questions on relatively large subjects, leaving the details to the following discussion.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

If necessary, during the examination, the student will also be asked to solve simple problems to test the operational capabilities acquired.
