OVERVIEW

Radiotherapy is therapy using  ionizing radiation, generally as part of cancer treatment to control or kill malignant cells and normally delivered by a linear accelerator. It can be associated with surgery, chemotherapy and / or hormone therapy to ensure the best control of the disease.
Nuclear Medicine uses artificial radionuclides by employing them in non-sealed form for therapeutic diagnostic purposes and biomedical research.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To know the base of radiotherapy, through the basic concepts of radiobiology and organ radiopathology, clinical indications, expected toxicity and expected clinical outcomes of the most common cancer diseases.

To know in detail the radioprotection aspects of operators and patients, related to the acquisition and processing of digital images with particular reference to current regulations and guidelines for patient protection in nuclear medicine. Understand the physical principles underlying the ionizing radiations revealed by radioactive isotopes. To know the procedures that are being carried out in a nuclear medicine service.

LEARNING OUTCOMES (FURTHER INFO)

The aims of the course are to

- educate students about relationship with patient, to undertand the main radiotherapy techniques and to know the base of clinical radiation oncology

- to know the state of art on Nuclear Medicine
