OVERVIEW

The course deals with the general aspects of the production process, the mechanical and functional properties and the selection criteria  of materials, particularly for applications in chemical plants and in construction. They are deepened the relationship between microstructure and properties of steels and metallic alloys, ceramic materials, binders, plastics, adhesives, glass and composite materials.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge of the materials properties, how production processes and post- treatment affect  material properties and how to optimize the performance of materials. Formulate the general criteria for the material selection depending on the design characteristics.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons and classroom exercises.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The classes of materials. Chemical bonds and crystal structures. Linear and point defects. Phase diagrams. Metallic materials. Strength properties and relations with the microstructure.

Steel: Brief description of the production process and thermal treatment and thermo-mechanical treatment.

Ceramic materials and glasses: the main steps of the production process, sintering, mechanical and functional properties. Structure and properties of polymeric materials.

Outlines of composite materials.

Binding materials, mechanisms for setting and hardening. Properties and composition of the concrete.

Materials selection in relation to the project.

EXAMS

Exam description

The oral exam is designed to assess the knowledge of the main characteristics of the materials used in the context of chemical engineering and an understanding of the relationship between chemical structure, microstructure and materials properties (mechanical and functional). It will also be evaluated the student’s ability to make a choice between different materials in relation to the realization of a simple device.

Assessment methods

During the oral examination an initial question will focus on one of the topics of the course chosen by the student and after a discussion and possible request for clarification will be made a second question on a topic chosen by the teacher.
